How difficult was it for you, Baran, given that I assume you dont speak all, what, 10-12 languages your actors do? Weve talked to a lot of people whove had the opportunity to see the first six episodes, and its kind of half and half. One may be desperate to see the world the duo has created for 1899, the teams new Netflix series, but could also be slightly worried their brain might not be able to handle it. I need 360 degrees. Thats when the idea came to use a turntable so you can swap things in easily. It was a set constructed specifically for the series. In talking about a mirror world, though, we wanted to use that trick and actually mirror the images. Also, we actually thought about putting some of the stuff thats now in Season 3 into Season 2, but then decided to move it backwards. What did you learn using the new tech? You just trying to be flexible, to really allow the process to surprise you while youre going through it, but still kind of knowing where youre sailing to. We had a lot of photography from really weird people with very strange lighting setups that created a very interesting isolation of the figures in the images. And then, looking at expression and body language, and all these things, you get an understanding of the performance. The ending, knowing where youre going is one thing, but then finding the ways to get there is really a whole different challenge, said Friese. Friese knows the reason for his injury and eye patch, but wouldnt reveal what happened. But I dont want to fill those gaps.

Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who also created the streamer's hit 'Dark, are back with another meta mystery, this time set on a migrant steamer at the turn of 19th century. We always approached it as a global show, but we never, never, never expected that kind of success.. It could be a crying smiley face, or it could be a winking smiley face. Friese says she was bothered by this for the first few months actively working on the scripts for 1899, but, "At some point, we just said, 'Let's shake it off.' That's what we tried to do. Friese: I think its something about growing up in Europe, or growing up as a German, when you consume entertainment, which, at least in our experience, is coming largely from Hollywood. "We prepped a year to get there, because it is a beast that you have to understand. Its a new kind of thinking for filmmaking: You have to think in layers and how you combine those layers. It creates such a powerful illusion that, in the beginning, the crew and actors were actually getting seasick because the horizon was moving on the volume screen. What were some of the touchstones you used when designing the series? Odar says there were two reasons why they opted to use this new technology, which has been used previously on shows such as Disney+'s The Mandalorian. Especially with a show like Dark, which does close so many of those open loopholes, theres always a certain amount of desire to stay with those characters and see what happens after the turmoil has subsided. In the middle, there may be some ideas that are more loosely thrown in. We spoke to Dark co-creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese about saying farewell to the series, the spiritual and mythological influences they crammed into the third season's eight episodes, and how in the world they managed to keep everything straight.
